The Royal Society of Canada (RSC) honours new Fellows. Among the three new Fellows elected to the Academy of Social Sciences is Professor of Social Work and Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Children, Families and Armed Conflict, Myriam Denov.

Her award-winning scholarship and advocacy for children and families affected by war and migration have been previously recognized with the SSHRC Insight Award and the Killam Research Fellowship. In 2015, Denov was elected a Member of the RSC’s College.

Social Work Educator, Sheila Goldbloom dies at 96

Sheila Goldbloom who taught at the School of Social Work between 1964 and 1992, passed away at age 96.

Professor Goldbloom was involved with a number of community organizations including Meals on Wheels, l'Abri en Ville and the Foundation of Greater Montreal.

Professor Blackstock’s advocacy for First Nations children and families has led to a historic 40-billion-dollar settlement from the Federal Government recognizing discriminatory practices that led to the unnecessary placement of tens of thousands of children and failure to provide critical health and social services.

New study offers families parent training for children affected by neurodevelopmental disorders

The global pandemic has been hard on Canadians, but it has hit families affected by disability disproportionately, particularly young families. School-aged children with disabilities were suddenly without supports of any kind.

Schools were shuttered in March, and while remote learning was put in place, gone were Education Assistants or Special Needs Coordinators. Parents were expected to teach their children alone, many of them still juggling full time work.

The rights of the Mi’kmaq to fish is established in the Peace and Friendship Treaty of 1752 and upheld in the Marshall Decision of 1999.

In a photo voice study released this month in the International Journal of Child and Adolescent Resilience, Dr. Melanie Doucet worked with eight former youth in care to describe what types relationships they had found most helpful as they left group or foster care. Animal companions also emerged as an important non-human connection.

Professor Myriam Denov, Canada Research Chair in Youth, Gender and Armed Conflict, received a 2020 Killam Research Fellowship to support her work examining the needs of children born of war in northern Uganda.

Darrell Roy Johnson, 59, of Montréal died on February 9, 2020 at the Cornwall Hospice in Cornwall, Ontario. He spent his final days surrounded by family members and friends as well as many caring doctors, nurses, and personal support workers. He struggled valiantly following his brain tumour diagnosis in November 2018, always retaining his characteristic sense of humour and hope, but eventually succumbed to complications from the condition.

Our two students associations, including SWSA and SWAGS, played an active role in mobilizing students. One of our PhD students, Annabelle Berthiaume, was a member of the CUTE committees (Comités unitaires sur le travail étudiant), a key coordinating body for the movement.

Pride season fills me with nostalgia from joyous memories with friends as well as an indescribable sadness. Several years ago, a good friend of mine committed suicide. Despite being in a very loving long-term relationship and adored by his friends, he expressed being unable to shake a feeling of not belonging. I vividly remember a conversation during which he expressed the internal distress he felt about being a gay man, fuelled by judgment from society and his culture. I wish I could have understood then the depth of his suffering.

Using this donation, the CRCF has created the Aging Out of Care Scholarship in recognition of Mr. Batshaw’s life’s work and his specific interest in assisting children aging out of care.

Spirit Bear is not a household name, but he has become the symbol of Jordan's Principle, a child's-first principle meant to ensure that First Nation children receive the health care they need without delays.

In 2015, she went on stage at the Periscope Theatre in Québec to a TEDx Quebec talk on the mental health.
