SCSD 611 D1/D2 Essential Competencies for Speech-Language Pathology 1 Practice and assessment of transverse competencies for the spring speech-language pathology practicum. Professional activities include simultaneous demonstration of multiple professional roles, especially expert, communicator, collaborator, advocate, scholar and professional. |
SCSD 631: Speech Science This course will provide the scientific bases of speech communication. The objective is to build a听basic understanding of speech acoustics, speech production and speech perception that can be applied to understand speech processes in normal and disordered populations as well as听providing practical skills for the analysis of speech in a clinical setting. |
SCSD 617: Anatomy and Physiology for Speech Language Pathology This course will act as an introduction to topics in anatomy and physiology of the human body as it relates to the field of speech-language pathology. Topics covered will include anatomical language for orientation and movement, an overview of body systems, the skull and the brain, and respiratory anatomy and physiology. This course is designed to establish a foundation for future learning and discussions relating to anatomy and physiology. |
SCSD 637: Developmental Language Disorders I - Lecture This course will develop knowledge and skills about the nature of developmental language听disorders. The assessment of language competencies and performance in both speaking and nonspeaking听children will be studied. |
SCSD 619: Phonological Development -听 Lecture Theories and research related to normal and abnormal phonological development in children will be studied and applied to samples of child speech. |
SCSD 637: Developmental Language Disorders I - Lab This course will be delivered in person. Given that most of the time will be used for practical activities, the class will not be recorded. |
SCSD 619: Phonological Development - Lab Theories and research related to normal and abnormal phonological development in children will be applied to the task of describing children鈥檚 speech using IPA. Students will practice describing speech produced by adults and children, including authentic adult speech, adult simulations of child speech, typical child speech, and atypical child speech. Students will practice administering and scoring one standard test. |
SCSD 681: Practicum & Seminar I This is the first in a series of four practicum and seminar courses which focus on various aspects of clinical training. This course provides an introduction to the profession of Speech-Language Pathology and introduces the students to clinical work and competencies. |
SCSD 624: Language Development and Processes Typical language development across the lifespan, progressing from the building blocks of speech perception to conversation and narrative production. Attention will be paid to the role of input, individual differences in acquisition, and language socialization. In parallel, we will cover skilled perception, processing and production of these aspects of language in adulthood. Relevance of material for speech-language pathology will be highlighted. |
IPEA 500: Interprofessional Education Activities This course includes preparatory work and a half day workshop with students from other healthcare disciplines in the Faculty of Medicine. It introduces students to Interprofessional education, Interprofessional practice and the roles of different healthcare professionals. |

SCSD 630: Research & Measurement Methods The purpose of this course is to cultivate critical thinking and provide a source of current information on how to read, interpret and evaluate research so as to help the student become a critical consumer of research in communication sciences and disorders. The course will also help those who wish to design research that will further their own professional success. |
SCSD 613: Introduction to Counselling A practical approach to basic and advanced counseling for the speech-language pathology context, with topics as follows: counseling of persons with communication and swallowing disorders, families of children with disabilities, clients who are expected to deteriorate and their families. SCSD 644: Acquired Language Disorders Various classificatory systems and appropriate assessment and remediation听principles for brain-damaged individuals will be covered. Theoretical and clinical issues relevant to treatment of aphasic, neuromotor, and memory disorders will be considered. |
SCSD 626: Aural Rehabilitation This course will familiarize the student with issues central to understanding the impact of hearing loss/deafness on speech and language in various populations (both adult and pediatric) and will introduce models and approaches for habilitation/rehabilitation of communication in these populations. |
SCSD 689: Management Cranio-Facial Disorders Craniofacial disorders ad the role of the Speech-Language Pathologist in the clinical management of clients with these disorders in relation to the roles of the other members of the craniofacial team. |
SCSD 627: Practicum & Seminar 3A This is the third, in a series of four practicum and seminar courses, which focus on various aspects of clinical training (scope of practice, clinical experiences, and interprofessional education). This course reviews different topics relating to professionalism and diversity, equity, and inclusion in clinical practice. The Fall Practicum experience is part of this class. |

SCSD 643: Developmental Language Disorders II Major theories of language disorders听are translated into intervention principles used in language treatment programs. Adaptations of听intervention techniques to suit specific disorders (including augmentative communication) will be explored. |
SCSD 609: Neuromotor Disorders The focus of this course will be on the assessment and management of motor speech disorders associated with both acquired and developmental neuromotor disorders. It provides the basis for understanding the organization and function of the nervous system in controlling speech production. The objective is to identify the perceptual characteristics of various motor speech disorders necessary to assess and treat motor speech disorders in children and adults. |
SCSD 682: Practicum & Seminar II This is the second in a series of four Practicum & Seminar courses, which focus on various aspects of clinical training. This course reviews the documentation associated with the profession of Speech-Language Pathology (S-LP) as well as other clinical expectations and practices. The 1st Year Winter Practicum is part of this class. |
SCSD 632: Phonological Disorders in Children In this course, the nature of phonological disorders in children, and clinical approaches for their remediation will be discussed. |

SCSD 638: Neurolinguistics Current theories of language are studied: brain relationships and speech and language deficits subsequent to brain damage. A review of current research on phonetic, lexical, and syntactic processing in brain-damaged individuals is included. This course builds on material covered in SCSD-624 (Language Processes) and provides a foundation for issues introduced in SCSD-644 (Applied Neurolinguistics). |

SCSD 636: Fluency Disorders This course is designed to provide the student with an understanding of the nature and treatment of stuttering in children, adolescents and adults. The lectures also include an overview of acquired, neurogenic and atypical stuttering as well as cluttering. |
SCSD 614 Literacy Across the Lifespan A clinically oriented review of typical reading development and processing followed by S-LP practice for individuals with developmental reading disorders and acquired reading and writing disorders. |
SCSD 689: Management of Cranio-facial Disorders Craniofacial disorders and the role of the speech-language pathologist in the clinical management of patients with these disorders in relation to the roles of other members of the cranio-facial team. |
SCSD 625: Autism Spectrum Disorders & Neurodevelopmental Disorders This course designed for SLP master鈥檚 students provides an overview of assessment and intervention of two special populations (1) Autism and (2) Reading disabilities, and the range of clinical presentations observed in these two broad conditions. The course fosters reflective clinical problem-solving using case-based learning and makes evidence-based practice feasible through formative experiences in the application of evidence to cases. |
IPEA 502: Patient-Centered Care in Action This course includes preparatory work and a half day workshop with students from other healthcare disciplines in the Faculty of Medicine. It introduces students to a simulated family centered care scenario and, in interprofessional teams, they must develop a plan of care. |
SCSD 628: Practicum & Seminar 4A This is the fourth, in a series of four practicum and seminar courses, which focus on various aspects of clinical training. This course covers topics relating to professionalism, ethics, conflict resolution, management and leadership. Students obtain practice preparing CVs and cover letters and preparing for interviews. |

SCSD 629: Augmentative Alternative Communication This course will develop knowledge and skills for the assessment and intervention with clients who could benefit from Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). Concepts related to the types of potential AAC users, elements of various AAC systems and strategies, components of assessment and methods of intervention will be explored. |

SCSD 616: Audiology The objective of the course is to provide a basic understanding of the diagnostic and rehabilitative goals of clinical audiology. The course will familiarize students with concepts that underlie proper administration, interpretation, and application of information obtained in a basic audiologic evaluation. |

SCSD 639: Voice Disorders Voice Disorders is a 3-credit graduate course that provides an overview of voice disorders, including causes, assessment, and treatment across the life span. The course also addresses the role of the speech-language pathologist in the multidisciplinary handling of patients with voice problems.
