Please join us for the public lecture "By Way of Obstacles" by Professor Emmanuel Falque, Dean Emeritus of the Faculty of Philosophy at the Catholic University of Paris. This event concludes the Montreal research seminar of the International Network in Philosophy of Religion (INPR) on the theme "Forgetting the Soul." The event is organized by Dr. Pablo Irizar, current holder of the Kennedy Smith Chair in Catholic Studies.

In By Way of Obstacles, Emmanuel Falque revisits the major themes of his work—finitude, the body, and the call for philosophers and theologians to "cross the Rubicon" by entering into dialogue—in light of objections that have been offered. In so doing, he offers a pathway through a work that will offer valuable insights both to newcomers to his thought and to those who are already familiar with it. For it is only after one has carved out one's pathway that one may see more clearly where one has been and where one might be going. Here readers will discover the profound relation between Falque's emphasis on the human experience of the world and his desire for philosophy and Christian theology to enter into conversation. For only by speaking within the human horizon of finitude can Christianity be credible for human beings, and it is because Christian theology teaches that God entered into our finitude that it can also teach us something of what it is to be human. Contemporary phenomenology, Falque warns, over- privileges an encounter with the infinite that cannot be originary. Calling us back to finitude, he calls us to a deeper understanding of our humanity.

Dans By Way of Obstacles, Emmanuel Falque revient sur les grands thèmes de son œuvre — la finitude, le corps et l’appel aux philosophes et aux théologiens pour "traverser le Rubicon" en entrant en dialogue — à la lumière des objections qui lui ont été faites. Ce faisant, il propose un parcours à travers un travail qui offrira de précieuses perspectives à la fois aux nouveaux venus à sa pensée et à ceux qui la connaissent déjà. Car ce n’est qu’après avoir tracé sa propre voie que l’on peut voir plus clairement où l’on est allé et où l’on pourrait aller. Ici, les lecteurs découvriront la relation profonde entre l’accent mis par Falque sur l’expérience humaine du monde et son désir de la philosophie et de la théologie chrétienne d’entrer en conversation. Car ce n’est qu’en parlant dans l’horizon humain de la finitude que le christianisme peut être crédible pour les êtres humains, et c’est parce que la théologie chrétienne enseigne que Dieu est entré dans notre finitude qu’il peut aussi nous enseigner quelque chose de ce qu’est être humain. La phénoménologie contemporaine, prévient Falque, privilégie une rencontre avec l’infini qui ne peut être originelle. Nous rappelant à la finitude, il nous appelle à une compréhension plus profonde de notre humanité.
