Technology-Mediated Plurilingual Language Learning: Challenges and Opportunities in Teacher Education
In the last decades, plurilingual-inspired pedagogies have been recommended as a response to the increasing linguistic and cultural diversity in language classrooms worldwide. However, empirical research findings from different parts of the world have shown that language teaching practices are still pervaded by a monolingual ideology. Studies also indicate that one of the main stumbling blocks for the enactment of plurilingual education is language teachers’ limited understandings of plurilingual instruction. In order to tackle this issue, several researchers and educationalists have called for the development and investigation of new models of language teacher education with the potential to shape teachers’ professional identities that extend beyond the stance of being one-language-teachers. In my talk, I’m going to discuss findings from studies that have responded to this challenge. I will start by briely reviewing the current research. I will then present and discuss empirical results from collaborative research I have conducted on language teacher education in the last seven years. This includes findings from two European Projects (TEMPLATE and VALIANT) funded under the Erasmus Plus program. My talk will place special emphasis on models of language teacher education that explore the intersection between technology use and the integration of plurilingual-inspired pedagogies into the foreign language curriculum.

Bio
Dr. Euline Cutrim Schmid is Professor of applied linguistics and TEFL and Director of the Institute for Languages and Literature at the University of Education Schwäbisch Gmünd in Germany. She has conducted research in the areas of computer-assisted language learning, language teacher education and plurilingual approaches to foreign language teaching and learning. Her work can be found in journals such as Language Learning and Technology, ReCALL, CALL, System, Innovation in Language Learning and Teaching, and Applied Linguistics Review.
