Clinicians who conduct procedures have much to learn from other elite performers in fields such as performing arts and sports. Procedural disciplines in medicine require discipline, extensive training, and practice to achieve the professionalism and skill deserved by all patient encounters. The adherence to the highest standards and benchmarks will not only protect patients from adverse events but also optimize health outcomes. The opportunity to learn the process of attaining mastery in performance and professionalism from non-health sectors such as music is invaluable for our trainees. Music is the epitome of a field that fosters discipline, precision, superb work ethic and additional professional values required to achieve the elite performance expected by audiences around the world. We had the opportunity to offer a unique workshop for eight highly motivated ƽ岻 learners (medical students or residents) in which they attended a concert rehearsal by the Montreal Symphony Orchestra (Saturday, February 17th). This was followed by an open and personal discussion with select MSO artists to elaborate on the processes they follow to achieve expertise, as well as demands, potential sacrifices, and rewards of a career as an elite performer.
