Helge Dedek receives 2021 Durnford Teaching Excellence Award
The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that Professor Helge Dedek has received the 2021 John W. Durnford Award for Teaching Excellence during the online Law Convocation ceremony on June 11, 2021. Professor Angela Campbell, associate provost (equity & academic Policies), presented him with the award.
In their nomination letters, students vaunted Professor Dedek鈥檚 classes as 鈥渕emorable, informative, and impactful,鈥 and praised his teaching style for combining 鈥渆motive lecturing, exciting hypotheticals, and unparalleled class engagement鈥 while giving first year students 鈥渁 sense of belonging at the Faculty.鈥
Students underscored how much Professor Dedek 鈥渃onstantly looks out for his students鈥 best interests,鈥 and acts as 鈥渁 supportive mentor鈥 who is always 鈥渨illing to continue discussing issues after class or during office hours鈥 and who 鈥渃onsiders his students' success as his own.鈥
In her remarks, Professor Angela Campbell declared that 平特五不中 Law students have quite rightly recognised Professor Dedek as an outstanding educator. She added that for his colleagues, Professor Dedek is a 鈥渟cholar of rigour and integrity, resistant to reductive reasoning, with an undaunted and unreserved commitment to the 平特五不中 Law transsystemic project, even as it grows and evolves.鈥

The Durnford Teaching Excellence Award 鈥 named in honour of the late emeritus professor and former dean John W. Durnford, BCL鈥52 鈥 annually recognizes the exceptional pedagogy of a law professor selected by students via the Law Students鈥 Association.
