1970s and 1980s

Pearl Eliadis, BCL鈥85, LLB鈥85, was presented with the 2024 Award for Excellence in Human Rights of St. Thomas University鈥檚 Atlantic Human Rights Centre. She delivered the 2024 Dr. Bernie Vigod Memorial Lecture in Human Rights, titled 鈥淒o Human Rights Commissions Work? Reflections for Canada.鈥 In the spring, she was awarded the Distinguished Service Award at the Pearl Eliadis is a full member of 平特五不中鈥檚 Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism and has had an accomplished career as a human rights lawyer, successfully leading global projects for multilateral agencies, including the United Nations.

David Howes, CM, FRSC, BCL鈥85, LLB鈥85, was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada鈥檚 Academy of Arts and Humanities. A full professor at Concordia University鈥檚 Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Professor Howes has made significant contributions to Canadian legal history and constitutional studies, and been a staunch advocate for the practice of cross-cultural jurisprudence.

Robert Katz, BCL鈥86, LLB鈥86, visited the law faculty in May to meet with three recipients of the Robert L. Katz and Christina H. Otto Scholarship. The scholarship was established in 2018 by Bobby Katz, and Tina Otto, BA鈥85, in support of the Faculty of Law's response to the calls for action set by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. The Hon. Panagiotis Pamel, BCL鈥87, LLB鈥87, a Judge of the Federal Court, was appointed a Judge of the Federal Court of Appeal. Before his appointment to the Federal Court, Justice Pamel practiced at McMaster Meighen, a predecessor firm of Borden Ladner Gervais (BLG). Apart from a short stint in industry, he practiced in the area of maritime law at BLG for over 30 years.

Charles Randy Smith, BCL鈥83, LLB鈥84, was reappointed for a five-year term as chairperson of the RCMP External Review Committee. He has served 30 years as a legal officer with the Office of the Judge Advocate General for the Canadian Forces. His reappointment aims to build on his previous term鈥檚 achievements, focusing on enhancing organizational accountability within the RCMP and fostering a healthy, respectful, and inclusive workplace for its members.

Ian M. Solloway, BA'70, BCL '73, joined Montreal family law firm Spunt & Carin as senior counsel. A fellow of the International Academy of Family Lawyers, Mtre Solloway was named Chair Emeritus of the English-Speaking Section of the Bar of Montreal in November 2023, after having served as chair from 2009 to 2017.

1990s

S茅bastien Beaulieu, LLB鈥98, was appointed Director General, Emergency Management, at Global Affairs Canada in Ottawa to lead Canada鈥檚 international response to consular emergencies around the world. He previously served as Ambassador to Senegal and Tunisia, Envoy for Syria, Executive Director for the Middle East, and Global Affairs鈥 Chief Security Officer.

Caroline B茅rub茅, BCL鈥99, LLB鈥99, was featured on House of Rose Professional鈥檚 Break the Ceiling Touch the Sky庐 2023 List of Asia鈥檚 Most Inspirational Women in Leadership. The list is curated by House of Rose Professional from a review of female executives at over 500 companies operating across Asia.

The Hon. Sally A. Gomery, BCL鈥90, LLB鈥90, was appointed a Judge of the Court of Appeal for Ontario in Toronto. She was previously a Judge of the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario in Ottawa. Over her 26 years of practice as a civil litigator, she handled a wide array of disputes, and was particularly active in the areas of insurance, medical malpractice, health sector regulation, and class action defence.

The Hon. Christopher Greenwood, LLB鈥96, Senior General Counsel at the Public Prosecution Service of Canada in Vancouver, was appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of British Columbia in Vancouver. Justice Greenwood began his career with the Department of Justice Canada and has worked at what is now the Public Prosecution Service of Canada since September 1997. During that time, he acquired a broad range of experience conducting trials and appeals, as well as providing advice on complex investigations.

Isabelle Marcoux, CM, BCL鈥94, a re莽u le Prix B茅n茅vole par excellence en philanthropie 2023 de l鈥橝ssociation des professionnels en philanthropie. Pr茅sidente ex茅cutive du conseil de Transcontinental inc, elle avait 茅t茅 nomin茅e par Centraide et la Fondation de l鈥檋么pital de Montr茅al pour les enfants, o霉 elle a men茅 d鈥檌mportantes campagnes philanthropiques.

Ian C. Pilarczyk, LLM '97, DCL '03, co-edited Law, Life, and the Teaching of Legal History: Essays in Honour of G. Blaine Baker, published by 平特五不中-Queen鈥檚 University Press in 2022. He continues teaching as an adjunct lecturer at Boston University School of Law and Tufts University. His company hired its third full-time employee in summer 2023 and plans further expansion in 2024.

Sarah Qadeer, BCL'96, was named General Counsel of the Year. She was honoured at the 2024 Canadian General Counsel Awards. Qadeer spearheaded a strategic shift in Deloitte's legal department, as the professional services firm positioned itself as a leader in innovation and technology consulting. Brian Salpeter, BCL鈥94, LLB鈥94, was named Executive Vice-President of Development at Cadillac Fairview (CF). In this role, he will be responsible for leading CF鈥檚 Development team, including the strategic planning, financial returns and execution of its residential, industrial, retail, office and mixed-use development platform. Prior to joining CF in 2015, he was a partner at Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg in Montreal.

Christine Vogelesang, BCL鈥95, LLB鈥95, was recognized in the 19th edition of The Best Lawyers in Canada鈩 guide as a leading practitioner in Securities Law for 2025. A counsel at Torys, Mtre Vogelesang maintains a broad registrant regulation and compliance practice where she advises on registration, self-regulatory organization, and marketplace/exchange issues.

2000s

The Hon. Y. Liliane Bantourakis, BCL/LLB鈥04, previously Crown Counsel at the British Columbia Prosecution Service in Vancouver, was appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of British Columbia in New Westminster. Before her appointment, Justice Bantourakis was an advocacy advisor and a British Columbia Regional Committee member for the Supreme Court Advocacy Institute.

Kelly Elliott, BCL/LLB鈥08, was named Chief Operating Officer of Dentons Canada. In this role, she will provide day-to-day leadership and management on operational matters. Prior to transitioning to management, Mtre Elliott was a partner and deputy leader of Dentons鈥 national Real Estate group.

Joseph Hillier, BCL/LLB'08, has joined the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario as Chief Strategy Officer and Corporate Secretary. He was most recently Chief of Staff to the Attorney General of Ontario.

Sophie Lamonde, BCL鈥01, LLB鈥01, a 茅t茅 nomm茅e associ茅e directrice du bureau montr茅alais de Stikeman Elliott. La pratique de Me Lamonde est principalement ax茅e sur les domaines des fusions et acquisitions et du capital-investissement. Julie Lassonde, BCL/LLB鈥04, received the Laura Legge Award of the Law Society of Ontario. The award recognized their exemplary leadership in advancing social justice issues, and their commitment to inclusivity and diversity. Co-founder of the first Francophone women shelter in Toronto, they have also worked with the Action ontarienne contre la violence faite aux femmes and the Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic for women survivors of intimate-partner violence and sexual assault. She is currently a commissioner at the Canadian Human Rights Commission.

Claudio Andres Luqui, Gr Ct Airspace Law'06, was appointed as Chief Legal & Risk Officer for Amicorp Group, based in Dubai. In this role, he is responsible for overseeing business operations in more than 40 offices in more than 30 countries.

Anna Matas, BCL/LLB'06, received the Women's Law Association of Ontario President's Award for 2024. This award recognizes excellence and leadership in the legal profession. She has been a member of Board of Directors of the Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic for 8 years and is currently the Chair of the Board. The clinic provides legal, counselling, and interpretation services to survivors of violence.

The Hon. Vanessa Rochester, BCL/LLB'04, was appointed a Judge of the Federal Court of Appeal. She was previously a Federal Court Judge since 2021. Prior to her appointment to the Federal Court, Justice Rochester practiced predominantly in the areas of maritime and transportation law. She worked with the late Professor William Tetley, a widely known and respected maritime law scholar, before entering private practice in the Montreal office of Norton Rose Fulbright, where she spent most of her career.

Erika Sasson, BCL/LLB'06, was awarded The David Prize, which celebrates New Yorkers with ideas for extraordinary change. This award, which comes with $200,000 in funding, will support her efforts to use restorative justice approaches in response to homicide cases and other types of complex harms.

Damion K. L. Stodola, BCL/LLB'01, has been appointed general counsel at the Adirondack Park Agency. He oversees the Agency鈥檚 Legal Division, which consists of the Office of Counsel, Legal Services Unit, and the Jurisdictional Inquiry Unit. He most recently served as the General Counsel with the New York City Commission on Human Rights, where he interpreted federal, state, and local statutes within the highly complex regulatory environment of New York City.

R茅gine Tremblay, BCL/LLB鈥09, a remport茅 le M茅rite Christine-Tourigny du Barreau du Qu茅bec. Ce prix souligne son engagement social et sa contribution particuli猫re 脿 la progression des femmes dans la profession et dans la soci茅t茅. Professeure adjointe 脿 la Peter A. Dominic DiFruscio, BCL/LLB鈥15, was confirmed as a Vice-Chair of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Committee on Consumption Taxes. Il est avocat et directeur en droit fiscal et politiques publiques au Minist猫re des Finances du Canada.

Alexandra Klein, LLM鈥11, was awarded the 2024 Lexology Global Counsel Award for immigration and labour law in recognition of her work as Immigration Practice Leader at the Mouvement Desjardins in Montreal.

Ngozi Okidegbe, BCL/LLB'15, was awarded the prestigious Derrick A. Bell Jr. Award from the Association of American Law Schools Minority Groups Section. The award was established in honour of the late Derrick Bell, the first tenured African-American faculty member at Harvard Law School. The annual award recognizes a junior faculty member who, through activism, mentoring, colleagueship, teaching or scholarship, has made an extraordinary contribution to legal education, the legal system, or social justice.

Maryna Polataiko, BCL/LLB'19, co-authored an Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP post about the Federal Government's proposed Canadian Online Harms Act. Her practice covers a wide range of privacy, data management, and cybersecurity matters, including advising on privacy and anti-spam compliance, drafting privacy policies and procedures, conducting diligence and others.

Maxime A. Pouliot, BCL/LLB'18, et Amanda Santache, BCL/LLB'17, ont 茅t茅 nomm茅s 芦 Avocats JBM de l'ann茅e 2023 禄 par le Jeune Barreau de Montr茅al. Me Pouliot a remport茅 le prix dans la cat茅gorie Droit familial et Me Santache, dans la cat茅gorie Droit criminal et p茅nal. Vincent Ranger, BCL/LLB'12, a re莽u le M茅rite du Barreau du Qu茅bec lors de la c茅r茅monie annuelle de l'ordre professionnel. Le Barreau a remis le prix 脿 M岬 Ranger pour son implication pro bono dans l'affaire Gestion George Kyritsis inc. c. Balabanian, 2024 QCCS 64. Priyanka Timblo, BCL/LLB鈥13, and her colleague were named The American Lawyer鈥檚 Litigators of the Week for their monumental $101 million jury verdict against Walmart in April 2024. A partner at Holwell Shuster & Goldberg, Mtre Timblo is a trial lawyer who represents clients in high-stakes commercial litigation and arbitration.

Congratulations, new law partners!

Olivier Archambault-Lafond, BCL/LLB'11 and Marie-Pier Cloutier, BCL/LLB'13, were named partner at Woods. Mtre Archambault-Lafond has extensive expertise in civil, commercial, and administrative litigation that entails financial, strategic, and reputational risks. Mtre Cloutier has vast experience in civil, commercial and administrative litigation obtained over the course of ten years in high-profile and large-scale cases before trial and appeal courts, including the Supreme Court of Canada.

Caroline-Ariane Bernier, BCL/LLB'14, and Alexandra Carbone, BCL/LLB'11, and Jason Phelan, BCL/LLB'13, were named partner at McCarthy T茅trault. Mtre Bernier is a partner in the labour and employment law group at the Montreal office. Mtre Carbone is a partner in the Tax Group in Montr茅al. Mtre Phelan鈥檚 practice focuses on corporate finance, securitization and banking law.

Roger Bill, BCL/LLB'14, was named partner at Norton Rose Fulbright. He is a lawyer in the business law group in the Montr茅al office. He focuses on corporate and commercial law, as well as on environmental, energy and natural resources law.

Antoine Champagne, BCL/LLB'15, and Jason Paperman, BCL/LLB'15, were named partner at Stikeman-Elliot. They are both partners in the Corporate Group.

Behzad Hassibi, BCL/LLB'16, was named Partner at Israel Foulon Wong LLP and included in the 2024 edition of Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch in Canada鈩 Labour and Employment Law. Specializing in employment law, Behzad has successfully represented clients at the Ontario Court of Appeal and the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.

Emily Hazlett, BCL/LLB'15, was named partner at Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP. Her practice includes complex commercial litigation and class action defence, with a focus on product liability. During her time at 平特五不中, she held a student clerkship at the Court of Appeal of Quebec.

Matthew Hendy, BCL/LLB 鈥10, was named partner at Davies Ward. His practice on domestic and cross-border mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures and private investments, most often representing private equity sponsors and other financial institutions.

Rose Massicotte, BCL/LLB'16, was named partner at Borden Ladner Gervais. Her practice represents the interests of businesses of all sizes, both unionized and non-unionized, and she handles all aspects of labour and employment law.


2020鈥檚

Camila Franco, BCL/JD'23, won the 2023 Justice Rosalie Silberman Abella Award of The Royal Society of Canada. The Prize is presented annually to a graduating law student who is most likely to positively influence equity and social justice in Canada or globally. She worked at the Centre for Research Action on Race Relations, 平特五不中鈥檚 Legal Information Clinic, and the Citizen Lab on issues ranging from racial profiling to tenant rights, and digital surveillance.

Anne Iavarone-Turcotte, LLM鈥15, DCL鈥21, a publi茅 l鈥檕uvrage (Collection Minerve, Presses de l'Universit茅 Laval, 2024). La pr茅face est sign茅e par le professeur Daniel Weinstock, MSRC. Anne Iavarone-Turcotte est actuellement chercheuse postdoctorale 脿 la City University of New York, sous la direction de la professeure Serene Khader.

Shona Moreau, BCL/JD'24, was selected for a 2024-25 Pathy Foundation Fellowship. With the award, she plans to set up a mobile refugee legal clinic in Johannesburg with local partners, before commencing her clerkship at the Constitutional Court of South Africa.

Gabriel Obando, LLM鈥20, and Efat Elsherif, BCL/JD鈥22, who met at the Faculty of Law, got engaged while back on campus in February 2024. We wish them joy and good health in their life together!

Henry Off, BCL/JD'21, won the 2023 Essay Contest of the Canadian Bar Association's International Law Section. A lawyer based in Toronto, he has worked widely in international law and criminal justice, including as a prosecutor for the Ministry of the Attorney General and in his previous roles at the Permanent Court of Arbitration and Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia.

Jacqueline Sirois, BCL/JD'24, et Dalia Tarchila, BCL/JD'24, ont 茅t茅 des laur茅ates de la cohorte inaugurale de la Bourse de la d茅mocratie, pr茅sent茅e par la Fondation Jean-Charles-Bonenfant.
