Brief Description:

"Clinical education is the most important formative period in the development of health professionals. It is often characterised as an apprenticeship in which undergraduate and graduate learners are inducted and socialised into becoming independent practitioners. It has been this way for centuries. An interesting, but often ignored truism about clinical education apprenticeship is that much of what is learned is learned implicitly, whilst observing or participating in practice. Students and trainees pick up things as they go along without even knowing that they are learning and changing. This presentation will share some insights and observations derived from a one year ethnography looking at how implicit learning and teaching occur in the context of hospital-based medical and surgical teams. The presentation will look at how norms, values, practices and clinical know-how are communicated and interpreted between senior and junior clinicians in clinical teams. It is hoped that by revealing the implicit and unspoken curriculum that applies within clinical teams, opportunities for enhanced clinical education can be realised."
