It was a poignant moment as Institute of Health Sciences Education Faculty Member Dr. Stuart Lubarsky accepted recognition during the 22nd annual Faculty Honour List for Educational Excellence symposium this past June, as his parents and children looked on.

Institute Director, Dr. Yvonne Steinert, shared warm remarks for Dr. Lubarsky鈥檚 work as she handed him a certificate of recognition.

鈥淪tuart really is one of a kind and we are so grateful to have him as a Faculty Member of the Institute,鈥 Dr. Steinert said. 鈥淚 cannot say how much we appreciate the work that he does for students and residents, and for the field of health sciences education.鈥

Affiliated with the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery, Dr. Lubarsky is a teacher and educational researcher who actively fosters learners鈥 skills for reflective practice, interprofessional collaboration and reasoning under uncertainty.

His current educational research interests include clinical reasoning, assessment of competence in undergraduate and postgraduate medical learners, and script concordance testing.

A recipient of several teaching awards from both residents and medical students, Dr. Lubarsky has mentored over 300 students and residents and was an Osler Fellow for eight years (2010-2018).

He recently collaborated with Dr. Robert Sternszus to successfully launch Foundations in Medical Education, an elective designed to introduce students and residents to medical education by having them develop evidence-based curricula with real-world potential.

鈥淲orking with Dr. Lubarsky was a very enriching experience,鈥 said one learner. 鈥淗is empathy and communication skills with patients and families are remarkable.鈥
