The Orthodox Jewish Feminine Divide. Performance, Technology, and the Artist in North America
Description:
This talk explores the trajectory of the musical feminine divide in Hasidic and Yeshivish/Litivish circles from its development to its current transformation. Informed by the norms of modesty (tziniut), women and girls act, sing, and dance in an exclusive feminine private space, creating a division with the masculine performative spaces. Whereas performance is not new for Orthodox Jewish women, their newfound access to music production thanks to the 鈥渄igital turn鈥 has transformed how women and girls create and disseminate their music.
