We are delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. William Foulkes as the Chief of the Division of Medical Genetics in the Jewish General Hospital Department of Medicine, effective January 1, 2024.

听

Dr. Foulkes is a three-time graduate of the University of London, holding a BSc in Anatomy, a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, and a PhD in Molecular Genetics.

听

Having been an integral member of the Division of Medical Genetics at the JGH since 1997, Dr. Foulkes is also a clinician-researcher with laboratories at both the Lady Davis Institute for Medical Research and the Research Institute of the 平特五不中 Health Centre.

听

In addition to his impressive academic background, Dr. Foulkes holds a Distinguished James 平特五不中 Professorship in the Departments of Medicine, Oncology, and Human Genetics. Recently appointed as the Chair of the Department of Human Genetics, he also holds the Alva Chair in that Department.

听

Dr. Foulkes is renowned for his extensive collaboration with colleagues worldwide to advance the understanding of the inherited basis of various cancers. Over the past 12 years, he has notably published over 90 papers on DICER1 and its associated syndrome. In 2014, he co-discovered SMARCA4 as the causative factor in Small Cell Carcinoma of the Ovary, Hypercalcemic Type, leading to novel treatment opportunities.

听

His contributions extend to the clinico-pathological characteristics of hereditary breast cancer, as well as the discovery and characterization of cancer predisposing founding mutations in Montreal populations.

听

Dr. Foulkes has supervised numerous students and fellows, boasting a publication record of over 700 peer-reviewed manuscripts. He is recognized as a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, the Royal College of Physicians, London, and the Royal Society of Canada.

听

In recognition of his outstanding contributions, the Government of Quebec awarded Dr. Foulkes the Prix Wilder-Penfield in 2020 as part of its Prix du Quebec competition. In 2022, he received the Dr. Chew Wei Memorial Prize in Cancer Research from the University of British Columbia. We are confident that Dr. Foulkes will continue to make significant strides in the field of medical genetics and contribute to the advancement of healthcare at the Jewish General Hospital.

We take this opportunity to thank Dr. David Rosenblatt for his stellar leadership as Chief of Medical Genetics at the JGH since 1999. During his tenure, the Division has achieved tremendous growth and excellence in patient care, teaching and research in Hereditary Cancer as well as Prenatal Diagnosis.

Le Dr Foulkes est dipl么m茅 脿 trois reprises de l'Universit茅 de Londres, d茅tenant un BSc en anatomie, un baccalaur茅at en m茅decine et en chirurgie, ainsi qu'un doctorat en g茅n茅tique mol茅culaire.

听

Membre essentiel de la Division de g茅n茅tique m茅dicale 脿 l鈥橦么pital g茅n茅ral juif (JGH) depuis 1997, le Dr Foulkes est 茅galement clinicien-chercheur avec des laboratoires 脿 l'Institut Lady Davis de recherche m茅dicale et 脿 l'Institut de recherche du Centre universitaire de sant茅 平特五不中.

听

En plus de son impressionnant parcours acad茅mique, le Dr Foulkes occupe une chaire distingu茅e James 平特五不中 dans les d茅partements de m茅decine, d'oncologie et de g茅n茅tique humaine. R茅cemment nomm茅 pr茅sident du D茅partement de g茅n茅tique humaine, il d茅tient 茅galement la chaire Alva dans ce d茅partement.

Le Dr Foulkes est renomm茅 pour sa collaboration 茅tendue avec des coll猫gues du monde entier afin d'avancer dans la compr茅hension des bases h茅r茅ditaires de divers cancers. Au cours des 12 derni猫res ann茅es, il a notamment publi茅 plus de 90 articles sur le DICER1 et son syndrome associ茅. En 2014, il a co-d茅couvert le SMARCA4 comme facteur causatif du carcinome 脿 petites cellules de l'ovaire, de type hypercalc茅mique, ouvrant la voie 脿 de nouvelles opportunit茅s de traitement.

Le Dr Foulkes a encadr茅 de nombreux 茅tudiants et fellows, publiant plus de 700 manuscrits 茅valu茅s par des pairs. Il est reconnu en tant que membre de l'Acad茅mie canadienne des sciences de la sant茅, du Coll猫ge royal des m茅decins de Londres et de la Soci茅t茅 royale du Canada.

En reconnaissance de ses contributions exceptionnelles, le gouvernement du Qu茅bec a d茅cern茅 au Dr Foulkes le Prix Wilder-Penfield en 2020 dans le cadre de son concours des Prix du Qu茅bec. En 2022, il a re莽u le Prix comm茅moratif Dr Chew Wei en recherche sur le cancer de l'Universit茅 de la Colombie-Britannique.
