'The history of Canada is to a certain extent the history of the Scots in Canada’ (The Scottish Tradition in Canada, 1976). Is this statement an example of exaggerated ethnic conceit or does it have any basis in fact and argument? This lecture will return to the primary evidence to try and come to grips with the historical realities of the Scottish impact on Canadian economic, political, religious and cultural development. The analytical lens will then broaden to explore the significance of the Scottish factor in the Atlantic and Asian empires and how far that is reflected in the Canadian experience.

Sir Tom Devine OBE is Professor Emeritus in the University of Edinburgh and long regarded as Scotland’s preeminent historian. Sir Tom has written and published on all aspects of Scottish history, from the Middle Ages through to the modern day. He is a frequent media commentator and active campaigner on issues as diverse as Scottish independence, protection of battlefield sites, Brexit, Scotland’s diaspora, and much more.
