David Cameron鈥檚 government will be remembered above all for three things: introducing gay marriage, winning a referendum on keeping Scotland in the United Kingdom, and losing a referendum on keeping Britain in the European Union. What connects these events? How have national and social questions intertwined? How did the Conservative Party become such a curious mixture of reaction and revolution? This talk explores the historical background to Britain鈥檚 current existential crisis.

*Brian Lewis is Professor of Modern British History, specializing in the history of the middle classes, urban history and queer/LGBT history.听听He is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and a winner of the听H. Noel Fieldhouse Award for Distinguished Teaching in the Faculty of Arts and of the Principal鈥檚 Prize for Excellence in Teaching.
