Performance: Early Music (M.Mus.)

Program Description

The Master of Music (M.Mus.) in Performance: Early Music (Thesis) offered by the Schulich School of Music is a research-intensive program that emphasizes transformative and experiential learning opportunities. The program's objective is to equip students with skills in knowledge synthesis, performance, and communication to either continue their studies or pursue professional opportunities.

Unique Program Features

  • The program offers early music specialists interested in historical performance practices a rich variety of performing experiences, including: 15–20 chamber ensembles (vocal, madrigal, viol, and recorder consorts, etc.);
  • The School houses several performance spaces, research & production laboratories, and two libraries with a vast collection of music resources;
  • The School is the only North American music faculty to produce a fully staged performance of an early opera every year;
  • Graduates pursue doctoral studies and perform with Montreal-based early music ensembles, including, among others: Les Violons du Roy and the Arion Baroque Orchestra, as well as Aradia and Tafelmusik in Toronto, and various ensembles in Europe (e.g., Concerto Palatino, Centre de musique baroque de Versailles).

University-Level Admission Requirements

  • An eligible Bachelor's degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA out of a possible 4.0 GPA
  • English-language proficiency
