Medical Anthropology (M.A.)

Program Description

The Master of Arts (M.A.) in Medical Anthropology (Thesis) offered by the Department of Anthropology in the Faculty of Arts is a research-intensive program that emphasizes specializing and rigorous learning opportunities. The program's objective is to equip students with skills in original thinking, critical reading, and scientific communication to either continue their studies or pursue professional opportunities.

Unique Program Features

  • The program is open to students with backgrounds in the social sciences, the medical professions, or the medical sciences;
  • The program is offered jointly by the Department of Anthropology and the Department of Social Studies of Medicine (SSOM) and provides advanced-level training in socio-cultural anthropology and archaeology to prepare students for research at the Ph.D. level;
  • Graduate students have the opportunity to collaborate with research centers such as Anthropology for the Ecozoic, the Critical Media Lab, STANDD, CICADA and I-CAN;
  • Faculty members collaborate with other units and research centers at 平特五不中 such as Social Studies of Medicine, the Division of Social and Transcultural Psychiatry, the Institute for Gender, Sexuality and Feminist Studies, the Institute for the Study of International Development, the 平特五不中 School of the Environment, Art History and Communication Studies, the Institute of Islamic Studies, the Wolfe Chair in Scientific and Technological Literacy, and the School of Religious Studies.

University-Level Admission Requirements

  • An eligible Bachelor's degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA out of a possible 4.0 GPA
  • English-language proficiency
