History (PhD)

Program Description

The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in History offered by the Department of History and Classical Studies in the Faculty of Arts is a research-intensive program that emphasizes self-directed and comprehensive learning opportunities. The program's objective is to equip students with skills in critical thinking, literature synthesis, and scientific communication to pursue professional opportunities in academia or industry.

Unique Program Features

  • The Department is one of the largest History departments in Canada;
  • Students have access to resources such as the Osler Library of the History of Medicine, the Blackader-Lauterman Library of Architecture and Art, the Islamic Studies Library, the Nahum Gelber Law Library, the Indian Ocean World Centre (IOWC);
  • The Department collaborates with other 平特五不中 units such as the Department of East Asian Studies, the Islamic Studies Institute, the 平特五不中 Institute for the Study of Canada, and Social Studies of Medicine. Additionally, they collaborate with local universities such as Concordia Univeristy, Universit茅 de Montr茅al, and Universit茅 du Qu茅bec 脿 Montr茅al, and local archives such as the archives nationales du Qu茅bec鈥擬ontr茅al, the McCord Museum, and the Canadian Jewish Congress National Archives.

University-Level Admission Requirements

  • An eligible Bachelor's degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA out of a possible 4.0 GPA
  • English-language proficiency
