Food Science & Agricultural Chemistry (M.Sc.)

Program Description

The Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Food Science and Agricultural Chemistry (Non-Thesis) offered by the Department of Food Science & Agricultural Chemistry in the Faculty of Agricultural & Environmental Sciences is a course-based program that emphasizes comprehensive and career-focused learning opportunities. The program's objective is to equip students with skills in problem identification, information literacy, and independent thinking to pursue professional opportunities (or potentially continue their studies).

The program is also available with a Food Safety option: which is intended to train graduate students as specialists in food safety with the expectation that graduates will be well prepared academically to take on the challenging food safety events and issues that emerge both in Canada and globally.

Unique Program Features

  • The program may be completed in three to four academic terms (12 to 16 months);
  • Students complete a project under the direction of a staff member or external supervisor which normally includes wet or dry lab work involving an analysis of data pointing to a current research problem in food science;
  • The program delivers training in interdisciplinary areas such as food quality, food safety/food microbiology, food chemistry, food biotechnology, food packaging, functional ingredients, bimolecular spectroscopy, food processing, enzymology, nano sciences, thermal generation of aromas and toxicants, marine biochemistry, and chemical toxicants.

University-Level Admission Requirements

  • An eligible Bachelor's degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA out of a possible 4.0 GPA
  • English-language proficiency
