Educational Psychology (PhD)

Program Description

The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Educational Psychology offered by the Department of Educational & Counselling Psychology in the Faculty of Education is a research-intensive program that emphasizes engaging and innovative learning opportunities. The program's objective is to equip students with skills in literature review, critical thinking, and scientific communication to pursue professional opportunities in academia or industry.

The program is offered as one of the following options:

Human Development option: focuses on core areas of human development such as cognitive, language, social, personality, and gender development among children and adolescents with diverse trajectories and from various family, educational and community contexts.

Learning Sciences option: focuses on theory and research on understanding and improving learning and teaching in formal and informal educational settings including K-12 and post-secondary institutions, the workplace, professional practice, and virtual learning communities.

Unique Program Features

  • Students benefit from access to the 平特五不中 Psychoeducational and Counselling Clinic and the Departmental Assessment Materials Resource Centre;
  • The Human Development option is unique in examining developmental trajectories from a variety of interdisciplinary perspectives;
  • The Human Development option utilizes a mentorship model, which emphasizes the development of knowledge and skills through professional relationships. Students are initially sponsored into the program by a faculty member who shares their area of interest and agrees to function as program supervisor.
  • The Learning Sciences option offers practical training in research design, advanced data analytic techniques, and professional development through coursework and dissertation supervision.

University-Level Admission Requirements

  • An eligible Bachelor's degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA out of a possible 4.0 GPA
  • English-language proficiency
