Educational Psychology (M.A.)

Program Description

The Master of Arts (M.A.) in Educational Psychology (Thesis) offered by the Department of Educational & Counselling Psychology in the Faculty of Education is a research-intensive program that emphasizes challenging and thought-provoking learning opportunities. The program's objective is to equip students with skills in original thinking, literature synthesis, and academic writing to either continue their studies or pursue professional opportunities.

The program may be taken as one of the following options:

Health Professions Education option: focuses on the practice of teaching and learning as they happen in the health professions and throughout the lifespan. Student admission and supervision is done jointly with the Institute of Health Sciences Education (IHSE).

Human Development option: focuses on core areas of human development such as cognitive, language, social, personality, and gender development among children and adolescents with diverse trajectories and from various family, educational and community contexts.

Learning Sciences option: focuses on educational research and its application to practice. Exploration and application of contemporary psychological and educational theories and empirical studies in (a) cognition, learning, and instruction; (b) self-regulation, motivation, and emotion; (c) technology-rich learning environments; and (d) social, cultural, and historical foundations of learning.

Unique Program Features

  • Graduates develop research competence to critically evaluate, design, conduct, and report empirical research in medical education and other health professions, design courses and programs.

Health Professions Education option

  • Designed for health professionals interested in conducting educational research and working on development projects (e.g., program, curriculum, faculty) as well as for Education Psychology graduate students interested in issues related to medical education and education in other health profession;
  • The program was designed and is offered in collaboration with the Institute of Health Sciences Education and affiliated faculty.

Human Development option

  • The program is unique in examining developmental trajectories from a variety of interdisciplinary perspectives where content courses offer in-depth views on child and adolescent development;
  • Students benefit from a mentorship model and are encouraged to be involved with research supported by their academic advisors;
  • Students typically have a high success rate of attracting external fellowships and awards.

Learning Sciences option

  • Research in this area focuses on four core and interrelated areas: Cognition, learning and instruction; Self-regulation, motivation and emotion; Technology rich learning environments; and Social, cultural and historical foundations of learning.

University-Level Admission Requirements

  • An eligible Bachelor's degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA out of a possible 4.0 GPA
  • English-language proficiency
