Bioresource Engineering (M.Sc.A.)

Program Description

The Master of Science, Applied (M.Sc.A.) in Bioresource Engineering (Non-Thesis) offered by the Department of Bioresource Engineering in the Faculty of Agricultural & Environmental Sciences is a course-based program that emphasizes in-depth and skill-based learning opportunities. The program's objective is to equip students with skills in resourceful thinking, information literacy, and data analysis to pursue professional opportunities (or potentially continue their studies).

The program may be taken as one of the follow additional options:

Environmental Engineering option: is designed to train environmental professionals and those with an undergraduate degree in engineering at an advanced level.

Integrated Food and Bioprocessing option: provides students with the tools to understand how food and agricultural production interact to better manage agricultural, food, and biomass systems for the adequate supply of wholesome food, feed, fiber, biofuel, and any other bio-based material.

Keywords: sustainability, bio-remediation, environmental data analytics, environmental policy, pollution control, circular economy; ecological engineering, sustainable bioresource consumption and supply chain engineering, hydrology and water engineering and management, water resource and environmental systems engineering, soil and water ecology engineering, bioenvironmental engineering, sustainable engineering; food security, food safety engineering, bioproducts processing, biopolymer, biotransformation, sustainable bioprocess design, agro-residue valorization, biobased chemicals, biosystems sustainability analytics, circular bioeconomy.

Unique Program Features

  • The program is typically aimed at individuals already employed in industry or seeking to improve their skills in specific areas (soil and water, structures and environment, waste management, environment protection, post-harvest technology, food process engineering, environmental engineering) in order to attain a higher level of engineering qualification;
  • Learning activities include coursework, a research project, and in some cases an internship;
  • The Environmental Engineering option emphasizes the development interdisciplinary fundamental knowledge, practical applications in diverse environmental contexts, and the functional skills needed for solving environmental problems;
  • In the Integrated Food and Bioprocessing option students will acquire the skills needed to assess existing production, delivery, and quality management systems, introduce improvements, and communicate effectively with policy makers and with colleagues in multi-disciplinary teams.
