Finding what you need

Stephanie Sirmakesyan, an MSc student in Experimental Surgery鈥檚 story of finding everything she needs as a graduate student at 平特五不中

Few students can say they have never stepped foot on campus during the length of their studies. Stephanie, a second year M.Sc. student in the Department of Experimental Surgery, is one of those rare examples. Yet, despite having started her graduate studies during a global pandemic and having been remote for most of it, she would not have changed a thing.

平特五不中 offered her a sense of community and belonging; a community of diverse students with unique academic and professional journeys. As Stephanie puts it: 鈥淭he program in Experimental Surgery is not something that I've really seen at any other schools. Specifically, I saw it as being a gateway into leading a career in academia, industry work or medicine. It allows you to do whatever you want to do afterwards.

Holding a B.Sc. in Molecular Biology from neighbouring Concordia University, she decided to pursue graduate studies at 平特五不中 for one simple reason: a thirst for knowledge that is deeply rooted in an interest in science and research.

Under the supervision of Dr. Lysanne Campeau at the , Stephanie does fundamental wet lab research on diabetic voiding dysfunction. Like many labs at 平特五不中, Dr. Campeau鈥檚 lab supports several grad students in the pursuit of their academic and professional goals.

Finding a supervisor can be challenging, even more so during a global health pandemic. When reflecting on her relationship with her supervisor, Stephanie smiles and says: 鈥淲e have a very good relationship. Dr. Campeau is a physician and more specifically a surgeon, so she is in the clinic with her patients quite often. Nevertheless, she really does make the time to stay involved with my colleagues and I. She's very supportive, advocates for me, and is there to provide guidance when we need.

At 平特五不中, supervisors and students alike receive many emails. Stephanie cheerfully admits that students receive many emails [from the university] throughout their studies. Yet, through these emails she was able to find the resources that fit her academic and career goals.

Being in a thesis-based program, she was unsure where to start. Luckily, after participating in a thesis writing workshop and with the support of her lab, she was well-equipped to embark on her research journey.

As Stephanie prepares to submit the first draft of her thesis, she reflects on her unique experience at 平特五不中 and advises: 鈥All the resources are there. All the help that you need is there and it's a great school. Whether professionally, academically, or socially, there are so many good aspects to 平特五不中. You just have to go and find what you need. Trust me, it is there for you.鈥
