Join us for the third seminar of the DGPH seminar series with Dr. Will Greaves, PhD, Associate Professor of International Relations at the University of Victoria. Dr. Greaves will deliver a talk titled Climate Change and In/Security in Canada.

Abstract

This presentation examines the implications of human-caused climate change for in/security in Canada. It first outlines the impacts of climate change on five areas of security in Canada: human security, economic threats, Arctic threats, humanitarian crises at home and abroad, and increased risk of domestic conflict. I then argue that despite the material threats it poses, climate change has not been successfully ‘securitized’ due to the intersections of Canada’s distinct regional interests, electoral system, and partisan ideologies. It concludes by outlining two distinct potential futures for climate-related in/security in Canada.
