Is the celebration of pluralism in epistemological view points and methods impeding the conscientious, explicit, and judicious use of research evidence for the assessment of causal policy claims?

Epistemological and methodological pluralism are celebrated in the social sciences, as well as in textbooks on evidence-based policy. However, these two forms of pluralism unintentionally pave the way to increased flexibility in epistemological view points, methods and ways to formulate causal policy claims, which can in turn pave the way to reduce the quality of evidence (by increasing evidence in directness, evidence in consistency and risk of bias). Reduced quality of evidence is likely to lead to reduced evidence credibility and legitimacy, which might in turn impede听evidence use in support of causal policy claims. The essay concludes by questioning our level of preparedness for the promotion of evidence-based policy.
