Education Welcomes Two New McCall MacBain Scholars

Two members of the Fall 2024 cohort of McCall MacBain Scholars will begin their funded Master’s studies at ƽ��岻��’s Faculty of Education. Designed to encourage purposeful leadership, the scholarships enable students to pursue a funded degree while participating in mentorship, coaching, and a leadership development program.

Recipients were chosen based on exceptional character, community engagement, leadership potential, entrepreneurial spirit, academic strength, and intellectual curiosity.

On Sunday, March 10, 2024, at "A Taste of Tea", Playmas Montreal Cultural Association recognized Sabi Kamilah Hinkson “as a woman of merit” and awarded her a certificate “to honour her excelling contribution in the field of education and her role as a Black Woman of Excellence contributing to the advancement of Montreal’s Caribbean and wider communities.”

Sabi is a PhD student in DISE.

Members of ƽ��岻��'s leadership including the Faculty of Education’s Associate Dean of Academics, Dr. Sheryl Smith-Gilman, were hosted by the Mohawk community of Kahnawà:ke on November 22, 2023 for a day of learning and collaboration.

“What a fantastic experience it was to be part of the day of learning at the longhouse,” Dr. Smith-Gilman reported. Apart from her role as Associate Dean, Dr. Smith-Gilman’s academic career has largely involved Early Childhood Education and Indigenous Education.

The article centers on graduates of the certificate in Indigenous language and literacy education, a 30-credit program offered in the Cree communities over three years through a partnership between the Cree School Board and the Faculty of Education's Office of First Nations and Inuit Education (OFNIE).

It’s a labour of love between ƽ��岻��’s Office of First Nations and Inuit Education (OFNIE) in the Faculty of Education, and the Kahnawà:ke Education Centre (KEC). It’s also in line with ƽ��岻��’s Task Force on Indigenous Studies and Indigenous Education.

Carolyn E. Turner has been named as the winner of the 2018 Cambridge English Language Assessment/ILTA Distinguished Achievement Award.

Carolyn Turner completed her PhD in Second Language Education at ƽ��岻�� in 1988 with a dissertation on the factor structure of cloze test performance in francophone university level students. She went on to work as Assistant then Associate Professor at ƽ��岻��'s Department of Integrated Studies in Education.

Allison Gonsalves and Dawn Wiseman, of our Department of Integrated Studies in Education, presented their Teaching Science in Homework Zone pilot project at two Montreal-area schools this year. These workshops, presented to elementary school students in an after-school setting, have the goal of showing science-based materials in an engaging and accessible fashion. The project recruited 14 volunteer students from Science Education with DISE and from the Faculty of Science to work together and design three workshops, each about 45 minutes in length.

Artist-in-Residence invites students, faculty to Wednesday workshops

Maria Ezcurra, Artist-in-Residence with the Department of Integrated Studies in Education (DISE), invites faculty and students to weekly art workshops each Wednesday.

Faculty and students are invited to the library space on the 1st floor, between 10 am and 3 pm, to develop art projects. Art materials will be provided. Participants are encouraged to donate a piece of unused clothing for a series of textile portraits.

Anne Ashton's Tiburón installation to open at OBORO

Montreal's OBORO gallery presents Anne Ashton's Tiburón from September 12, 2015 until October 17. Anne Ashton currently teaches painting with the Faculty of Education.

The Tiburón installation "deals with the great white shark," reveals OBORO's promotion for the exhibit, "in danger of extinction due to human impact. The artist's intention is not to romanticize or demonize this animal, but rather to emphasize the uniqueness, as well as the primeval and mystifying beauty of this rare species..."

Annual Pow-Wow and Indigenous Awareness Week, September 2015

During the month of September ƽ��岻�� will host the 14th Annual Pow-Wow (September 18) and the 5th annual Indigenous Awareness Week (September 21-25). ƽ��岻��’s Indigenous Awareness Week is designed to increase awareness at ƽ��岻�� about Indigenous peoples in Canada. The week honours the many Indigenous cultures across the country including First Nations, Métis and Inuit.

In Memoriam: Agus Nuryatno (1970-2014)

The Faculty of Education mourns the loss of Agus Nuryatno, alumnus of our Department of Integrated Studies, who passed away suddenly on December 16 of 2014. Agus Nuryatno, who is survived by his wife Ani Dama Swari and children Fariz, Angga and Putri, was teaching and researching in Japan, as a Visiting Scholar, at the time of his tragic passing.

Congratulations to ƽ��岻�� Department of Integrated Studies in Education PhD student Amélie Lemieux on being awarded a prestigious Social Science and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Joseph-Armand Bombardier CGS Doctoral Fellowship.

Amélie’s research explores the ways in which high school students’ reading practices evolve through an investigation of arts-related meaning making strategies.

Scarf Ceremony at First Peoples' House

On October 28th, 2014, First Peoples' House held a celebration to honor the Fall Graduates. It was a Scarf Ceremony followed by a dinner. It was held at the ƽ��岻�� Faculty Club. Jim Howden, the Director, and Tina Schiavone, one of the Student Advisors attended. It is always a special occasion sharing this moment with the graduates, members of their community as well as their partners and families.

DISE PhD grad Miranda Campbell short-listed for the 16th annual Donner Prize

Miranda Campbell, DISE PhD 2010 graduate and now professor of English at Dawson College has been short-listed for the prestigious 16th Annual Donner Prize. Her book "Out of the Basement: Youth Cultural Production in Practice and in Policy is one of five books vying for the 2013/2014 Donner Prize, the award for the best public policy book by a Canadian. Dr. Campbell's book was based on her dissertation which was supervised by Dr. Bronwen Low.
