Kanuk adapts jackets to milder winters, eyes international markets

Kanuk jackets are made for Quebec winters鈥攂ut Quebec winters aren鈥檛 as cold as they used to be. Bertrand Cesvet (BA鈥86, MBA鈥88) wants to make Kanuk jackets more versatile. Cesvet led a group of investors who recently bought the Montreal winter wear company from Champlain Financial, a private equity group.

ESG investing helped prepare Gillian Stein to become CEO of Henry鈥檚

Gillian Stein (BCom鈥00)鈥檚 great-grandfather founded the Toronto-headquartered electronics business Henry鈥檚 in 1909, but she never envisioned becoming the company鈥檚 CEO. Growing up, she had seen how stressful running the company could be for her father Andrew, who had a heart attack at the age of 47. 鈥淚 always had a ton of respect and passion and admiration for the business but it wasn鈥檛 something I wanted for myself,鈥 says Stein. 鈥淚 changed and the business changed.

Bachelor of Commerce student Nikki Tye is the recipient of the 平特五不中 Collaborative for AI & Society (McCAIS)鈥檚 Undergraduate Research Award (McURA) for Summer 2024. The $8,700 award, aimed at promoting interdisciplinary AI research in society, recognizes Nikki's project on "Protecting the Amazon Forest from Illegal Activity through Image Recognition and Operations Research: A Partnership with JungleKeepers and Peruvian Indigenous Communities."

2024 is shaping up to be a big year for Fran莽ois Cauchon (BCom鈥22). Cauchon will be representing Canada at the summer Olympic Games in Paris. "It is a surreal feeling," Cauchon, who battled through knee, back and ankle injuries before being named to Canada鈥檚 14-member fencing team, tells CBC. "For every amateur and professional athlete, The Olympics is the holy grail of sports."

BCom students selected for CEOx1Day program

The CEOx1Day program offers some of Canada鈥檚 top students the opportunity to learn directly from executives at some of the country鈥檚 most prominent companies. Hosted by the Odgers Berndtson Canada consultancy, candidates undergo a rigorous selection process and shadow the CEOs of organizations like Bombardier, Canadian Blood Services and the Royal Canadian Mint. This year, two 平特五不中 Desautels Bachelor of Commerce students made the cut.

MMR student shares how L'Or茅al Brandstorm led to internship

Last year, after months of hard work and 'brandstorming', two 平特五不中 Desautels teams took the podium at the 31st annual L'Or茅al Brandstorm competition, competing against top teams from across Canada! Madison Laxer and her fellow Master of Management in Retailing (MMR) teammates, Aditi Bali and Supreet Kaur, took third place.

Suggestion that out-of-province students don鈥檛 contribute to Montreal鈥檚 dynamism false

Brett Miller (BCom鈥86) moved to Montreal to study at 平特五不中, but he has made the city his home and become a leader in Quebec鈥檚 business community. Now the CEO of the real estate development company Canderel, Miller is concerned about the Quebec government鈥檚 plan to double tuition for out-of-province students beginning in Fall 2024. 鈥淭o suggest that out-of-province students don鈥檛 contribute to the dynamism of the city is such a false message to send.

平特五不中 Desautels graduate Avneet Bhabra (BCom鈥23)鈥檚 research paper 鈥23% and Counting, but Not 鈥極ne Size Fits All鈥: Helping Canada鈥檚 Immigrants Strengthen Their Financial Knowledge鈥 has been published by the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) on Canada.ca. Focusing on financial literacy amongst immigrants in Canada, the paper was selected as a finalist in the undergraduate category of the FCAC鈥檚 2023 Building Better Financial Futures Challenge.

Export Development Canada (EDC) has unveiled the recipients of its 2023 Youth Education Program scholarships, awarding $135,000 to 27 post-secondary students who excel academically and exhibit a dedication to community service. Among the recipients are two Bachelor of Commerce students from 平特五不中, Jennifer Shi and Quynh Huynh, who received the prestigious International Business Scholarship.
