For International Women's Day last week, Poets and Quants spoke with a number of female business school graduates who have successfully started their own enterprises. Aurélie Hélouis (MBA’16), Founder and CEO of infinityQ, a quantum analog computing start-up, shared how her time at Desautels helped her discover how to apply the skills she acquired as a former senior officer and CTO in the French Navy to her entrepreneurial endeavours and develop her own business.

Jaquelynn Mateluna (MBA'21) is leveraging her background in biology, plant sciences, and business to help her clients develop environmentally, financially, and socially sustainable production practices in the food, agriculture and energy industries. As she builds her career as a strategy consultant at EY Parthenon, she expresses gratitude for the ongoing support she receives from her professors and former classmates at the Desautels Faculty of Management.

Soon after the earthquake that devastated Haiti in 2010, Laura Parny Germain (BEng’15, MBA’21) moved from Port-au-Prince to Montreal with a deep resolve to use her education for the benefit of others. With engineering and MBA degrees from ƽ��岻�� under her belt, she looks forward to working toward socially and environmentally sustainable solutions to the challenges her hometown faces.

Graduate spotlight: Kelly Gonzalez, MBA ’21

Poets&Quants recently featured Kelly Gonzalez (MBA’21) on its “2021 MBAs to Watch” list. In one of the highlights of her Desautels tenure, Gonzalez served as the president of Marketing Club. In this capacity, she teamed up with the Desautels Graduate LBGTQ+ Association to launch the first edition of the Desautels Business Challenge, a case competition focused on improving equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI).

Gonzalez will soon take on a new challenge in the Customer and Marketing unit of Deloitte’s Vancouver office.

Inez Jabalpurwala (BA’89, MA’91, MBA’01) credits her years at ƽ��岻�� with inspiring her to take a stand for the causes she supports. As a member of the ƽ��岻�� Debating Union, she learned to express herself clearly and persuasively, a skill that served her well as the Global Director of VineX and former CEO of Brain Canada. Now, as a member of the ƽ��岻�� Board of Governors, Jabalpurwala works to ensure that those who come after her receive the same high-impact education.

Sakhia brings more than 20 years of leadership experience in the pharmaceutical industry to the role.

As Chief of Staff for Lufa Farms, an urban farm-to-table e-commerce platform based in Montreal, the British Columbia native has played an instrumental role in supplying fresh, responsibly-sourced food to more than 20,000 families during the pandemic.

Global banking executive gives back to her alma mater

Alberta Cefis (BA’75, MBA’79) was one of only a dozen women in her MBA class at ƽ��岻��, but she never felt discriminated against because of her gender. The male-dominated banking industry, on the other hand, was a different story. Fortunately, Cefis was able to land a managerial role at the Royal Bank of Canada through a recommendation from a professor.

The Desautels Faculty of Management congratulates Sonya Branco (MBA’06) for being named one of Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women of 2020 in the “C-Suite Executives” category. Released by the Women’s Executive Network (WXN), this year’s Top 100 Award Winners list recognizes 106 Canadian women who advocate for workforce diversity and make an impact in their sphere of influence. Branco was appointed Executive Vice President, Finance and Chief Financial Officer, for CAE in 2016. She oversees the company’s operations in more than 35 countries.

Three graduating ƽ��岻�� students, Anastasia Budaeva, Ysa Cao and George Oriokot, have been named in Poets and Quants’ 2020 MBAs To Watch list.

The three ƽ��岻�� students were among 142 students selected on the list, which focuses on distinctive, eclectic and “rarely conventional” students. According to Poets and Quants, individuals who make the MBAs to Watch list are “the students with the courage to bet on themselves”.

Initially competing against 600 teams globally, the Desautels team travelled to Vilnius, Lithuania from November 26 to December 2 to compete as one of the top 10 finalists in the social business case competition.
