Chemical Society Seminar: Magnus Rueping - Metal catalysis for C-C and C-heteroatom bond forming reactions

Tuesday, October 8, 2019 13:00to14:30
Maass Chemistry Building Room 10, 801 rue Sherbrooke Ouest, Montreal, QC, H3A 0B8, CA

Abstract:

Catalytic C-C and C-heteroatom bond forming reactions represent key transformations for the synthesis of valuable products or advanced intermediates. In this presentation our introduction to the field of C-C and C-O bond activation as well as our the recent efforts for the development of new and valuable nickel catalyzed functional group interconversions will be highlighted. These include direct dealkoxylative, decarbonylative, deformylative and decarboxylative reactions. Furthermore, light mediated combined metal and photoredox catalyzed transformations, including C(sp3)-H functionalizations and olefin functionalizations will be presented.聽

Bio:

Magnus Rueping studied at the Technical University of Berlin, Trinity College Dublin and ETH Z眉rich, where he completed his diploma thesis under the direction of Professor Dieter Seebach. He stayed in the Seebach group and obtained his Ph.D. from ETH in 2002 working on the synthesis, the structural and the biological aspects of oligo(hydroxybutanoates) and of 尾- and 纬-peptides. Magnus then moved to Harvard University to work with Professor David Evans on enantioselective transition-metal catalysis.

In August 2004, he was directly appointed to a C3-associate professorship, the Degussa Endowed Professorship of Synthetic Organic Chemistry at Johann Wolfgang Goethe University of Frankfurt. After four years in Frankfurt, Magnus received several offers of academic positions and decided to accept a Chair and Full Professorship at RWTH Aachen University and since 2016 he is Professor of Chemical Science and member of the KAUST Catalysis Center.
