Sam Walker wins prestigious Gates Cambridge Scholarship

Samuel Walker, BCL/LLB'10, has been awarded a Gates Scholarship to attend the University of Cambridge (UK), where he will be pursuing a master's degree in international law.

While a student in the Faculty, Walker has been very active in international human rights. He interned in the War Crimes Chamber of the State Court of Bosnia-Herzegovina in Sarajevo, represented refugee applicants at legal aid clinics in Kampala and Montreal, and studied on exchange in Jerusalem. He was also co-president of the Human Rights Working Group student club for 2007-2008, and in 2008, he was selected to participate in the "Students for Development" program of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada.

In Cambridge, Walker plans to focus on international law, with an eye to developing a career in eitheracademia, international law or criminal law. "I hope to better understand how law can be used to make the welfare of humanity a practical objective," he explained.

About the Gates Scholarships

Created in 2000 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Gates Cambridge Scholarships are full-cost awards for graduate study and research in any subject available at the University of Cambridge. The Trust elects approximately 100 new Gates Scholars annually. Since the inaugural class of Gates Scholars in 2001, there have been over 820 Gates Cambridge Scholarships awarded, with scholars coming from 85 different countries.
