Saku Koivu opens MUHC PET/CT scanner

Published: 26 September 2005

Saku Koivu, whose foundation, in partnership with the MGH Foundation, provided significant leadership and financial support, will officially open the PET/CT facility at the Montreal General Hospital of the MUHC. Dr. Robert Lisbona will be on hand to talk about the clinical applications of this technology.

Time: 3:30 pm on Monday, Sept. 26
Place: 5th floor, Montreal General Hospital

As the name implies, the PET/CT combines both PET (positron emission tomography) and CT (computed tomography) scanners, which provide health professionals with detailed three-dimensional images of patient metabolism and anatomy. The exquisite sensitivity of the PET/CT scan permits the detection of cancer in the early stages, and provides valuable information on the spread of disease and the progress of therapies.

"This PET/CT scanner is the most sophisticated presently available and will revolutionize the management of many cancerous conditions at the MUHC," says Dr. Robert Lisbona, Chief of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine at the MUHC. "This is yet another step in the MUHC's drive to provide the best care for life."
