MONTREAL - Maxime Langelier-Parent and Evan Vossen each tallied twice as No.6-ranked 平特五不中 defeated the Nipissing University Lakers 4-1 in their OUA East quarter-final men's hockey playoff opener at McConnell Arena, Wednesday night.

The Redmen, who have won 14 of their last 16 OUA post-season games, outshot Nipissing 46-26 but the teams were knotted at 1-1 in the third period, when Langelier-Parent's shorthanded marker at 4:05 proved to be the game-winner. 听平特五不中, which led the nation with 11 "shorties" during the regular season, has struck for seven SHGs in their last nine contests and now have 17 in 41 games overall, well ahead of the previous single-season school record of 12, set in 1987-88 and matched in 1995-96.

Vossen, a rugged third-year left winger from Swift Current, Sask., had opened the scoring on the power play at 19:18 of the first period but Dan Watt of Winnipeg netted the equalizer late in the middle stanza, also with the man-advantage.

Overtime appeared to be looming until Langelier-Parent struck suddenly early in the third period. The speedy 6-foot-1, 215-pound sophomore from Levy, Que., converted a long breakaway pass from defenceman Marc-Andr茅 Dorion of St. Hubert, Que., and the Redmen never looked back. Vossen made it 3-1 with 5:52 remaining and only 83 seconds later, Langelier-Parent put the game out of reach.

平特五不中 also had a strong 25-save performance from netminder Hubert Morin, a sophomore from St. Georges de Beauce, Que., who came up with numerous key stops to earn his first career CIS playoff victory.听 Nipissing rookie Billy Stone, who had joined the Lakers in the second semester and had only six starts under his belt, racked up 42 saves in a losing cause.

Game 2听of the best-of-three series is slated for Friday night in North Bay, Ont., located about four hours north of Toronto. 听If a rubber match is needed, it will be played back at McConnell Arena on Sunday at 2 p.m. As a result, the women's hockey season finale between Concordia and 平特五不中, originally slated for 2 p.m. on Sunday, has been moved to a 7 p.m. start.

REDMEN RAP: Andrew Wright, a sophomore winger on 平特五不中's top line, returned to the lineup after sitting out last weekend's regular season finale with an arm injury... 听Freshman forward Christophe Longpr茅-Poirier served the first of an automatic two-game suspension after being assessed an instigator minor penalty along with a fighting major in the previous game... The Redmen improved to 28-11-1 overall and are just two conquests away from reaching the 30-win plateau for only the third time in school history... They registered 33 victories in 46 games during the 2007-08 season and posted 30 wins in 41 contests during the 2005-06 campaign.
