Quebec billionaire's ex loses common-law case
Published: 16 July 2009
Story: The former common-law spouse of a Quebec billionaire has lost her bid to have common-law couples treated the same as those who are legally married once the union splits up.
Lawyers representing the woman, who was trying to get a $50-million lump sum settlement plus $56,000 a month in support from her ex, argued that she was fighting for Madame-tout-le-monde who can't afford the legal costs. An estimated one million couples live common-law in Quebec - the highest proportion in Canada.
