Media Advisory: The Defense of Omar Khadr in Guantanamo

Published: 18 October 2007

平特五不中's Faculty of Law is proud to welcome William "Bill" C. Kuebler, an American lawyer and a lieutenant commander in the United States Navy Judge Advocate General's Corps who has been assigned to the Office of Military Commissions, for a public address. He has acted as counsel for Canadian youth Omar Khadr, detained in Guantanamo.

In 2002, at age 15, Khadr was captured by American forces in Afghanistan, and has been accused of causing the death of an American soldier. His case has drawn worldwide attention as he is one of the youngest prisoners held at the Guantanamo Bay detention camps, and the only Canadian.

In August 2007, Lt. Cmdr. Kuebler urged the Canadian Bar Association to use its position to pressure publicly the Canadian government to repatriate Khadr.

Lt. Cmdr. Kuebler will address 平特五不中's Faculty of Law on Friday, October 19, from 11:30-12:30, in Room 202, New Chancellor Day Hall. The event is organized by 平特五不中's Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism.
