平特五不中's Chartrand named league MVP as hockey all-stars announced
听
MONTREAL - Cathy Chartrand, a 平特五不中 defenceman from Lac Nominingue, Que., has been voted player of the year in the Quebec university women's hockey league. She was one of seven members of the Martlets honoured in voting conducted by the five conference coaches in the Quebec Students Sports Federation.
听
Chartrand also earned all-star status, along with Vanessa Davidson, a fifth-year senior from Kirkland, Que., and Ann-Sophie Bettez, a junior from Sept-Iles, Que., who each made the first squad. Teammates Caroline Hill, a senior rearguard from Dorval, Que., and Taylor Salisbury, a freshman goaltender from Surrey, B.C., each received second-team honours.
听
Salisbury was also one of two Martlets to make the league's all-rookie squad -along with forward Kim Thon-That of Vaudreuil-Dorion, Que.
听
Amey Doyle, 平特五不中's interim bench boss who hails from Smiths Falls, Ont., was named as the league's coach of the year after guiding the Martlets to a perfect 20-0 record - and helping the team extend their CIS record win streak to 80 games heading into post-season play. Doyle, who has served as an assistant coach at 平特五不中 since 2002, is replacing Peter Smith, who is on sabbatical to coach with the Canadian Olympic team.
听
Chartrand, a 5-foot-10 physical education junior and former national team player, was the top-scoring defenceman in the nation with 10 goals and 28 points in 20 games. In 35 contests overall, she enters the playoffs with a stellar 18-33-51 record. Chartrand, who has suited up for 113 career games with the Martlets, has already broken school records for most goals (51), assists (101) and points (152) by a blueliner - all marks that were previously owned by Catherine Ward (108GP: 36-99-135), currently a member of the Canadian Olympic team.
听
It marks the fifth consecutive year that a 平特五不中 player has garnered 听League MVP honours, following in the footsteps of Bettez (2009), Davidson twice (2008 and 2007) and Shauna Denis (2006).
听
Davidson, the team captain, captured the conference scoring championship for the third time in five years, posting a 13-20-33 record in 20 games. A 25-year-old physical education major, she scored five power-play goals, one shorthanded marker, three game-winners and five insurance goals.
听
Bettez, a 5-foot-4 winger who was hobbled by injuries for most of the year, led the Quebec league in goals and finished second in points with a 22-8-30 dossier in only 18 games. She led the league in power-play goals (6), shorthanded tallies (3), game-winners (5) and insurance markers (5). The 22-year-old management student missed a couple of regular season contests while playing overseas with the Canadian under-22 squad.
听
Hill, a 24-year-old physical education senior, had a career season and was the second-leading point-getter among all blueliners in the Quebec conference with 21 point, including 18 assists.
听
Salisbury, an 18-year-old science freshman, was edged out in the voting for the first all-star team by Carleton's Valerie Charbonneau despite registering better stats in every goaltending category. She posted an unblemished 10-0 record with a pair of shutouts, a stingy 1.10 goals-against average and a steller.944 save percentage.
听
Ton-That, 19, is a management major who was seventh among the league's top-scoring rookies with seven points, including four goals, in 20 games.
听
Rounding out the QSSF major award winners was Kim Desch锚nes of St. Quentin, N.B., a high-scoring forward with the Montr茅al Carabins who was named rookie of the year and Ottawa Gee-Gees blueliner Christine Allen of Gatineau, Que., who was selected as the conference nominee for the 2010 Marion Hilliard Award, presented to the CIS player who best combines academic and sport excellence with citizenship.
