平特五不中 to partner with Israeli research institutions

Memoranda of understanding signed during economic mission led by Mayor of Montreal

平特五不中 has signed three important memoranda of understanding this week for collaborative research partnerships with institutions in Israel. The memoranda were signed by Dr. Rose Goldstein, 平特五不中鈥檚 Vice-Principal (Research and International Relations), during an economic mission led by Montreal Mayor G茅rald Tremblay and co-organized by the Chambre de commerce du Montr茅al m茅tropolitain and Montr茅al International.

The memoranda cover the following initiatives:

  • renewal of a partnership with Weizmann Institute of Science in cancer research;
  • a new agreement with Tel-Aviv University鈥檚 Sackler Faculty of Medicine;
  • a new agreement with Bar-Ilan University, building on 平特五不中 Prof. Moshe Szyf鈥檚 groundbreaking work in behavioural epigenetics.

鈥淚ncreasingly universities need to develop world-class partnerships if they want to be in a position to solve the complex problems facing society,鈥 said Dr. Goldstein. 鈥淚nternationally, 平特五不中 is developing an approach to research that is more entrepreneurial and global. Israel has established very productive partnerships among universities, industry and governments 鈥 providing a particularly interesting example for Canada and 平特五不中.鈥

平特五不中 has enjoyed a highly successful partnership with the Weizmann Institute since 2007, resulting in a number of joint research projects and collaborative activities. The projects have focused on a wide range of cancer research. 平特五不中 and Weizmann have also developed collaborations in astrophysics, cosmology and evolutionary biology, which they plan to build on through the new agreement. The Weizmann Institute serves as a meeting place for scientists from different disciplines, setting the stage for multidisciplinary collaborations and the emergence of new research fields.

The Sackler Faculty of Medicine is Israel鈥檚 largest institute of higher medical education, with about 1,000 teachers in preclinical departments and in affiliated clinical departments and institutes, located in seven major medical centres, six psychiatric hospitals, and a large rehabilitation centre. Research in Sackler鈥檚 preclinical and clinical departments covers most fields of the biomedical sciences.

The goal of the proposed collaborative research activities with Bar-Ilan University 鈥 its first agreement with a Canadian institution 鈥 is to address the question of how exposures to drug, food, trauma and other life experiences are registered in brain circuitries and the genome as well as how they alter phenotypes, leading to human disease and affliction. Members of both the Bar-Ilan and 平特五不中 research groups are widely considered pioneers in these areas.
