Fr茅d茅ric Bachand appointed to Superior Court of Quebec

The Faculty of Law is proud to announce that Fr茅d茅ric Bachand, Ad. E., has been appointed a judge of the Superior Court of聽Quebec, district of聽Montreal. He replaces Madam Justice聽S. DeVito, who elected supernumerary status effective聽December 6, 2016.

鈥淢r. Justice Bachand will bring many qualities to the Superior Court 鈥 among them a keen mind; rigour; great practical wisdom; mastery of subjects including evidence, statutory interpretation, and civil procedure; and deep thoughtfulness on the role of adjudication relative to other modes of resolving disputes,鈥 said Dean Robert Leckey. 鈥淚t is a huge loss for us, but our colleagues named to the bench remain part of the community of the Faculty of Law. We wish him joy and every success as he continues in a new form his public service in the law.鈥

Mr. Justice Bachand聽holds doctorates from the Universit茅 de Montr茅al and the Universit茅 Panth茅on-Assas, in addition to an LL.M. from the聽University of Cambridge聽and an LL.B. from the Universit茅 de Montr茅al. He began his legal career with the firm of Ogilvy Renault and at the Supreme Court of聽Canada, where he clerked for Justice G茅rard La Forest. In 2003, he joined 平特五不中鈥檚 Faculty of Law, where he taught聽judicial institutions and civil procedure, legal interpretation, alternative dispute resolution, and evidence, among other subjects. His scholarship聽has primarily focused on domestic and international arbitration.

In parallel with his academic career, Mr.聽Justice Bachand聽has served as an accredited arbitrator in both domestic and international cases. He has contributed his time to numerous organizations, including the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, where he served on the board. In recognition of his contributions to the law and to legal education, he was named聽Advocatus Emeritus聽(Ad. E.) by the Barreau du Qu茅bec and received the John W. Durnford Teaching Excellence Award at聽平特五不中.
