What does language tell us about human thought, emotion and social life? Steven Pinker will explore the idea of language as a window onto human conceptions of space, time, causation, number, agency, sex and status. The lecture's focus is on words and grammatical constructions, but also on diverse phenomena like swearing, baby naming, legal language and euphemisms.
