Alumni Association of Victoria presents "ƽÌØÎå²»ÖÐ Society Public Lecture: Thinking About the Arts in Canada"
The ƽÌØÎå²»ÖÐ Alumni Association of Victoria
invites alumni, family and friends to the 15th lecture of the
ƽÌØÎå²»ÖÐ Society Public Lecture Series
"Thinking About the Arts in Canada" by Timothy Vernon, C.M.
As director of the ƽÌØÎå²»ÖÐ Orchestra and a professor in ƽÌØÎå²»ÖÐ’s Schulich School of Music, Timothy Vernon developed the University’s orchestral program and guided it, under his baton, in making Canada’s first important recording of a Mahler symphony and presenting acclaimed performances of major orchestral works at Carnegie Hall, the Lincoln Center, Roy Thomson Hall, the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, Le Grand Théâtre de Québec and Montreal’s Place des Arts. He also established Opera ƽÌØÎå²»ÖÐ, which remains an internationally acclaimed training program.
Over nearly thirty years as the founding artistic director of
Pacific Opera Victoria, Professor Vernon has stewarded a
compellingly unique vision for opera – a vision built on a diverse
and challenging repertoire, career-forging opportunities for
Canadian singers, and original productions created in Victoria by
Canada’s finest theatrical designers and directors. Because of his
wonderful ability to share such a vibrant vision, Professor Vernon
has been instrumental in building an audience for opera in Victoria
that is impressive in both its size and its sophistication.
Recently made a member of the Order of Canada, Professor Vernon is
a key figure in the Canadian cultural scene. For this year’s ƽÌØÎå²»ÖÐ
Society Public Lecture, he will provide some insights concerning
the state of the arts in this country. As a man whose life’s work
has been to bring all the arts together time after time for
operatic performance, Professor Vernon is uniquely qualified to
discuss this subject.
