Models of speech production have used various methods of dimensionality reduction, resulting in reduced degree-of-freedom systems. Dr. Gick is pursuing the thesis that these dimensionality reductions have stripped the vocal tract of its natural biomechanics, leaving a need for researchers to devise artificial mechanisms to manipulate these systems. An approach is proposed that exploits naturally occurring mechanisms for DoF reduction in a realistic, 3-dimensional vocal tract model (). In this model context, simulations suggest that the biomechanics of the body itself may constitute an adequate theory of speech motor control. Ideas/suggestions/discussion聽 are welcome!
