Every year in Kahnawà:ke, a Kanien:keha’ka community on Montreal’s South Shore, students present their projects at a science fair organized by the Kahnawà:ke Education Center (KEC).

For more than 15 years, KEC Science Curriculum Consultant Kathy Walsh has supported students at schools across the community as they prepare projects in the weeks leading up to the annual fair. This year, she and KEC Science Projects Liaison Mya Bordeau enlisted the assistance of ƽ��岻��’s Office of Science Outreach to bring ƽ��岻�� students into the classroom as mentors.

New Program at MILA AI Lab: Indigenous Pathfinders in AI

Indigenous Pathfinders in AI is an enriching summer program designed to offer participants a unique opportunity to explore the world of AI. Through a series of workshops, activities and collaborative projects, participants delve deeper into the subject through an experience that emphasizes Indigenous approaches, perspectives and communities.

Running from late May to mid-August, it offers a flexible mix of in-person and virtual experiences, designed to fit a wide variety of schedules.

Outbound Explore ƽ��岻��’s STEM outreach trip to Chisasibi

Graduate students in Education and Science earn Rathlyn Fellowships

CIFAR today announced its newest cohort of Canada CIFAR AI Chairs, which includes nine researchers from ƽ��岻��, bringing the total number of ƽ��岻�� researchers named to the program to 17. These top academic researchers are part of the $125 million Pan-Canadian AI Strategy, the world’s first national strategy of its kind. The Canada CIFAR AI Chair Program represents an investment of $30 million at nine universities, and mobilizes over 150 researchers across the country.

Professor Ragep Awarded Turkish Academy of Sciences Prize in Social Sciences and Humanities

Professor Jamil Ragep (Institute of Islamic Studies) is the recipient of the 2019 Turkish Academy of Sciences Prize in Social Sciences and Humanities. The award will be presented by the Turkish President Erdogan at a ceremony in Ankara on December 30.

Ragep is the Canada Research Chair in the History of Science in Islamic Societies.

Three outstanding women named finalists for the 2019 Cundill History Prize

The Impact of Childcare on Poor Urban Women’s Economic Empowerment in Africa

Despite evidence from other regions, researchers and policy-makers remain skeptical that women’s disproportionate childcare responsibilities act as a significant barrier to women’s economic empowerment in Africa. This randomized control trial study in an informal settlement in Nairobi, Kenya, demonstrates that limited access to affordable early childcare inhibits poor urban women’s participation in paid work.

And that is following a staggering increase over just seven decades — from 200 million people in 1950 to 1.25 billion in 20182. Meanwhile, temperatures across the continent are expected to rise by between 3 °C and 4 °C over the next century, bringing more drought, flooding, conflict and species loss3.

Every summer growing up, Fiona Beaty's family would make the trip from Vancouver to Bowen Island, where she would spend her time playing in the woods and turning over rocks at the shore in her search for crabs. Now, Beaty is back on the coast and her more recent explorations in marine biology are getting much more attention. Last month, she was awarded a National Geographic Early Career grant to support her latest project, the Howe Sound Atl'ka7tsem Marine Reference Guide.

As the grand prize winner, Pelc will receive $6,000 from the Canada Council for the Arts and a two-week writing residency at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. Green Velvet was selected by the jury comprised of writers Esi Edugyan, Iain Reid and Lisa Moore. "Told in clear, confident prose, Green Velvet is an elegant, beautifully-shaped story, lit with a wry humour that tilts unpredictably to melancholy. Department of Linguistics cracks top 20 of QS World University Rankings by Subject

The QS World University Ranking has five subjects at ƽ��岻�� ranked in the top 20 worldwide, including Linguistics which made a big jump from 38 to 17 and cracked the top 20.

Each of the subject rankings is compiled using four sources. The first two of these are QS’s global surveys of academics and employers, which are used to assess institutions’ international reputation in each subject. The second two indicators assess research impact, based on research citations per paper and h-index in the relevant subject.
